The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
Founded in the 1830s, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a mainline Protestant denomination of nearly one million members. We celebrate the Good News that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and our personal Savior.
While there is no church doctrine other than our common conviction that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and our personal Savior, Disciples churches are characterized by five other commonly held beliefs:
The Institution of the Lord's Supper
Communion is celebrated every Sunday in Disciples churches. The taking of sacraments offers us a weekly reminder of the unconditional love that God has shared with us through the Person of His Son.
The Institution of Baptism
We believe that baptism is an important outward symbol of a person's inner faith. It is a beautiful spiritual experience that alerts the world to a person's new status as a member of the Christian faith.
The Bible as our Rule and Guide
The Disciples believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and that our understanding and practice of the Christian faith is to be guided by its contents.
Oneness of the Church
We are characterized by a spirit of theological openness and Christian compassion for the poor and oppressed. The Christian Church has been a leading force in the ecumenical movement. As Disciples of Christ, we promote the unity of all Christians.
The Ministry of Believers
Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) website has a prayer room for requests, links to other online Disciple churches, calendar, pastor email list, history, ministries, and more information about our denomination.
